Although the movement started in Paris, Czech artists and designers drew their primary inspiration from the more restrained, rectilinear Secession style of the Viennese school. Thanks to the lack of war damage and postwar redevelopment, Prague has retained an impressive variety of Art Nouveau edifices. The ornate wrought iron entrance canopy, the mosaic in the arched gable and the gilded copper dome above, give a foretaste of the kind of ornamental detail that lies within, including a sumptuously decorated cafe\u0301 and restaurant (you can see the photos below), and the Smetanova si\u0301n\u030c concert hall.<\/p>\n<h2>Jan Hus Monument<\/h2>\n<p>1915 monument to Jan Hus the centrepiece of Starome\u030cstske\u0301 na\u0301me\u030csti\u0301. The Jan Hus Memorial stands at one end of Old Town Square, Prague in the Czech Republic. Designed by <strong>Osvald Poli\u0301vka<\/strong>, as was neighbouring Topic\u030cu\u030av du\u030am.<\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>U Nova\u0301ku\u030a<\/h2>\n<p>Former department store featuring exquisitely delicate ironwork and a mosaic facade by Jan Preisler.<\/p>\n<h2>Josefov<\/h2>\n<p>The old Jewish ghetto was demolished in the 1890s and replaced with luxurious five-storey blocks, giv- ing Josefov the highest density of Art Nouveau buildings in the city.<\/p>\n<h2>Masarykovo na\u0301br\u030cez\u030ci\u0301<\/h2>\n<p>From the most Legii\u0301, with its curlicue lampposts, the embankment of Masarykovo na\u0301br\u030cez\u030ci\u0301 is a non-stop parade of neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau mansions, with Hlaholthe best of the lot.<\/p>\n<h2>Palacky\u0301 Monument<\/h2>\n<p>Less well known than the Jan Hus Monument but even more striking.<\/p>\n<h2>Pru\u030amyslovy\u0301 pala\u0301c<\/h2>\n<p>A flamboyant steel and glass exhibition hall built for the 1891 Prague Exhibition, centrepiece of the trade-fair grounds.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The emergence of Art Nouveau in the late 1890s, with its curvaceous sculptural decoration and floral motifs, had an enormous impact on the art and architecture style of Prague.
